CEREC Dentist Q & A

What is a crown?

A crown is an artificial tooth cap that’s permanently sealed onto an existing root structure, like a natural tooth root or a dental implant. A crown covers up all of your tooth above the gumline, and once in place, it feels and functions just like a natural tooth.

Thanks to CEREC porcelain crowns, the team at Core Smiles can both give you a crown that looks just like your natural tooth and do it in your same visit using computer technology.

Why do I need a crown?

Crowns serve a variety of purposes, such as:

  • Restoring a tooth that’s suffered significant damage or decay
  • Reinforcing a weak tooth
  • Protecting a cracked tooth from further damage
  • Replacing an unsightly or discolored tooth
  • Capping off a dental implant

Because a crown covers all of your tooth above the gumline, it effectively fixes any problems you might have with a tooth cap by giving you a new one.

What’s a CEREC dentist?

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics or Ceramic Reconstruction, and the technology enables your dentist to design and fabricate a high-quality, all-ceramic crown in his office while you wait. A CEREC dentist is trained in the use of the technology and equipped with it in their practice.

What makes a CEREC crown unique?

Usually when you get a crown, your dentist takes an impression of your smile and sends it to an off-site lab. That lab designs and fabricates your crown in a process that typically takes 2-3 weeks.

The wait means you have to come back to the office a second time to finish your crown procedure, and you have to wear a temporary crown in between your visits.

With CEREC, your dentist can prepare your tooth, design and fabricate your crown, and seal it in place in a single visit, all in less than a couple of hours.

Your dentist numbs the tooth that is to be crowned, prepares the tooth, and takes a computerized impression of your mouth. Your Core Smiles dentist then designs your restoration using computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology, and wirelessly sends the design to an in-office milling machine that precisely and delicately carves your tooth out of a small ceramic block.

The metal-free ceramic that Core Smiles uses in their CEREC crowns is the closest material you can get to your tooth’s natural enamel, giving you a strong and healthy restoration that blends in seamlessly with the rest of your natural teeth.
